The Institute seeks to appoint a talented and dynamic faculty member specializing in Social Studies, with a strong background in History, Pakistan Studies, Geography, Citizenship, or Development Studies. The primary responsibilities include teaching, research, contributing to educational development projects, and academic administration. We are particularly interested in candidates with a proven track record in conducting high-quality research employing both quantitative and qualitative methods. The position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the Institute’s initiatives addressing the country’s pressing educational and developmental challenges.
Established in 1993, the Aga Khan University Institute for Educational Development, Pakistan (AKU-IED, P), is a highly respected institution recognized for its teaching, research, policy analysis, and work in the field with schools and other educational institutions. The Institute has three Professional Development Centres in Karachi, Gilgit, and Chitral.
ResponsibilitiesAs an Assistant Professor, Social Studies, you will be responsible to:
- design, plan, and deliver courses for degree programs;
- supervise research dissertations for graduate and PhD students;
- conduct independent and collaborative research aligned with Social Studies, particularly within your areas of expertise;
- write and secure research grants from internal and external funding sources;
- publish high-quality research outputs, including monographs, edited books, journal articles, and book chapters, with a focus on HEC-recognized and international journals;
- offer short courses, diplomas, and/or certificate programs through our Professional Development Centre;
- present research findings at national and international conferences;
- organize seminars, workshops, and conferences periodically;
- provide consultancy services to national and international organizations within your areas of expertise;
- contribute to the Institute’s inter-institutional initiatives, including collaborations with public institutions;
- participate actively as a member of AKU-IED and University-wide committees;
- lead, monitor, evaluate, and implement grant-funded projects;
- take on leadership responsibilities in academic and research programs;
- mentor junior faculty to support their teaching and research development;
- plan, review, and revise academic courses and curricula;
- participate in student recruitment processes, admissions committees, and curriculum reviews;
- contribute to initiatives that promote interdisciplinary approaches to the Social Sciences in education.
You should have:
- PhD in Social Studies or a related field (preferably with a focus on History, Pakistan Studies, Geography, Citizenship, or Development Studies). Exceptional candidates with a master’s degree and extensive experience in teaching and research may also be considered;
- strong track record of leading research projects, securing competitive grants, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals;
- demonstrated expertise in mixed method research;
- an academic background in one or more of the following: preferably History, Geography; Citizenship, Development Studies, or related disciplines;
- proficiency in designing and delivering courses in a blended learning mode;
- strong conceptual, analytical, and communication skills (oral and written);
- proven ability to work effectively within teams and diverse environments;
- history of writing successful research and outreach proposals;
- evidence of academic or project leadership;
- a commitment to professional growth and development in academia;
- proficiency in relevant computer software for research and teaching;
- experience in mentoring graduate students and junior faculty members;
- passion for addressing the social, historical, and developmental challenges within Pakistan’s educational context;
