Job Summary

The primary function of the Community Outreach Hygiene Promotor is to ensure the delivery of the WASH Hygiene promotion and community mobilization activities in the coordination and guidance of the Assistant, WASH - Hygiene Promotion or Officer WASH or WASH Manager or WASH Coordinator.

Conducting hygiene campaigns, house-to-house hygiene promotion, elaborating clear and adapted messages/activities for beneficiaries, and overseeing the hygiene promotion and other WASH activities conducted by the community volunteers.

The role provides data required in close cooperation with the team. Besides the Assistant, WASH - Hygiene Promotion ensures the capacity building of assigned local staff and stakeholders in WASH-related program implementation is delivered.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each of the essential functions under limited or basic living conditions and a working environment.

Main Tasks And Responsibilities

Assessment

Support the WASH team in conducting rapid needs assessments at community and household levels. Supports the Assistant, WASH - Hygiene Promotion in transitioning needs identified into activity plans and budgets.

Program Design and Implementation

Deliver the implementation of the aims and objectives of the WASH response program in line with the WASH Coordinator or Manager's WASH guidance and WASH strategy. Act as a mediator between IMC and the target communities. In collaboration with other actors, deliver suitable hygiene promotion activities that suit the local context (communities, health facilities, camps, and Schools) and would be widely accepted by beneficiaries. Conduct household visits to assess and promote household sanitation and hygiene behaviors. Sensitize communities on hygienic behavior and disseminate key messages about Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD)/Cholera through community radios. Deliver hygiene promotion messages at strategic times, including during community events or religious gatherings and through once-monthly community broadcasts. Educating food vendors and handlers on food hygiene is key to reducing infections. CHPs will organize training sessions, promote healthy environments, and reduce infectious diseases. Improve hygiene and sanitation, eliminate open defecation, promote proper use of sanitation facilities, ensure access to clean water, and encourage hand washing. Engage WASH committees to identify, analyze, and suggest practical solutions to the IDP and refugee communities’ WASH-related challenges. Work with the WASH committee on the treatment of water facilities and point of use (POU) and post-distribution monitoring of items in their areas of operation. Monitor the proper use, cleanliness, and maintenance of communal/shared sanitation facilities. Carry out sanitary surveys around water sources to identify possible contaminants and mitigate water source pollution. Submit weekly tally sheet reports to the respective supervisor in a timely and appropriate manner. Distribute basic hygiene kits to vulnerable communities with the support of a WASH officer as their supervisor. Identify locations/sites for WASH infrastructures (latrines construction/rehabilitation, borehole drilling/rehabilitation, etc.) in the beneficiary communities and coordinate closely with communities to identify informal settlements in host communities. Participate in hygiene campaigns and drama shows in schools, community and IDP camps. Collect health related data and keep records on activities of hygiene promotion. Report challenges and successes during the activities and any other issues that require IMC follow-up/action. If assigned, collect water samples from households and water sources and conduct quality tests using the Del Aqua Kit Record all results of the water test. Timely reporting of Hygiene Promotion activities to the Assistant, WASH - Hygiene Promotion

Minimum Qualifications

Secondary school certificate At least one year of work experience in implementing hygiene promotion systems in IDPs, refugee and migrant contexts. The ability to effectively analyze complex problems and suggest a solution that would have a positive impact. Ability and understanding of the WASH sector and its software and hardware components. Desired competence in using Windows and other software. Ability to effectively present information (both written and verbal) and respond appropriately to questions from senior managers, field counterparts, and senior government officials. Ability to understand gender-related challenges within the beneficiary groups. The ability to read, write, analyze, and interpret, technical and non-technical, in the local language is required.
