Men vs. Women: Who Uses VPNs More in Pakistan?

A recent survey by Gallup Pakistan has revealed that 18% of internet users in Pakistan use virtual private networks (VPNs), with younger individuals and men being the most frequent users.

The survey, conducted from January 7-12, 2025, covered 1,042 respondents across urban and rural areas.

According to the findings, 23% of male internet users rely on VPNs, compared to 10% of female users. Age also plays a role, with 24% of users under 30 using VPNs, while the percentage drops to 13% for those aged 30-50 and 15% for users over 50.

Pakistan banned “illegal” VPNs last year, citing security concerns, including their alleged use in financial transactions by militant groups. The decision followed restrictions on social media platform X in February 2024, sparking criticism from activists who accused the government of suppressing free speech.

Officials deny these claims, arguing that the measures ensure cybersecurity.

VPNs remain popular as they allow users to bypass restrictions and access blocked websites. The Interior Ministry previously urged the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to crack down on VPN use, particularly for accessing restricted content.

PTA estimates show that nearly 20 million Pakistanis attempt to visit banned websites daily.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Principal Developer at YetiTech is a senior hands-on technical leader responsible for architecting scalable systems, writing high-performance code, and mentoring engineering talent. Unlike traditional management roles, the Principal Developer leads by doing: actively coding, driving design decisions, setting standards, and elevating team performance across pods. They also play a key role in shaping our DevOps maturity and engineering culture.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

TECHNICAL ARCHITECTURE & DEVELOPMENT

Design scalable and maintainable system architectures aligned with long-term business goals.

Lead architecture reviews and decision-making for key backend projects.

Write and review high-quality code that follows best practices in testing, performance, and security.

Ensure environment parity across dev, staging, and production environments for critical systems.

DELIVERY, DEVOPS & TOOLING

Contribute actively to sprint work, delivering 4–6 features per sprint.

Ensure adherence to CI/CD and static code quality standards (e.g. linting, test coverage).

Monitor and improve DORA metrics: deployment frequency, change lead time, failure rate, and recovery speed.

Approve backend tooling and maintain pipeline health across active projects.

MENTORSHIP & TECHNICAL UPLIFT

Mentor mid-level and junior developers via pair programming, code reviews, and internal tech talks.

Guide peers in adopting clean code practices, secure design, and modern backend patterns.

Participate in team-wide knowledge-sharing and documentation efforts.

COLLABORATION & LEADERSHIP

Work closely with the Head of Engineering and CTO to define and evolve the technical roadmap.

Participate in architectural reviews and lead system design discussions across pods.

Take full ownership of end-to-end delivery for systems you architect.

Act as a model of professionalism, code quality, and collaborative leadership.

Job Specification :

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.

7+ years of professional experience as a backend or full-stack developer.

2+ years in a senior technical role (e.g. Tech Lead, Principal Engineer).

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

Proven ability to design scalable systems (microservices, APIs, data flows).

Deep experience with CI/CD, version control, code linting, static analysis, and automated testing.

At Careem, the mission of the NextGen Programme is to develop our next generation of engineers through a structured learning journey in Clean Code, SOLID design principles, and scalable system architecture. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineering Manager to lead a team of talented engineers and graduates who are embarking on their journey in software engineering. You’ll play a critical role in shaping the learning and technical growth of the team, mentoring them through real-world projects and helping them become world-class engineers.

You will be responsible for leading and scaling highly distributed systems, mentoring engineers in best practices, and continuously improving engineering processes. The systems you oversee will be core to Careem’s operations — powering everything from user interactions to payment processing.

What you'll do:

  • Lead a team of engineers within the NextGen Programme, focusing on high-quality service delivery and strong engineering foundations.
  • Drive the design, development, and deployment of scalable distributed systems in a microservices-based architecture.
  • Guide and mentor engineers in applying Clean Code, SOLID principles, and test-driven development.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to solve technical challenges and improve engineering efficiency.
  • Partner with other leaders to shape the technical roadmap and evolve the programme structure.
  • Foster a strong team culture of learning, accountability, and engineering excellence.
  • Maintain a high level of engagement and support across the team through regular feedback and coaching.

What you'll need

  • 10+ years of experience in software development, min 3 years in a management/senior engineering team lead role.
  • You have strong software engineering skills with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, software design and OOP.
  • Working knowledge of at least one of these Java, Go, Python, .NET.
  • Deep understanding of how to build scalable distributed systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent training, fellowship, or work experience.
