Location IntroductionThe Department of Paediatrics and Child Health is committed to providing state-of-the-art clinical services to children. It imparts high quality undergraduate and postgraduate training and subspecialty trainings and research opportunities. Besides the outpatient clinics, the inpatient set-up consists of a paediatric ward with two units comprising of 84 beds, a state of art Neonatal Intensive care unit with latest equipment and protocols in place and a capacity of 24 high acuity beds with one is to one staffing along with 10 bedded level 2 care monitored cots. The Neonatal section offers a 2 year Neonatal fellowship training and is one the oldest and established fellowship program with 6 fellows. In addition to care for sick babies, the section also provides services along with Pediatric consultants to the Well baby in the post-natal wards.
The overall objective of the project is to establish analytical infrastructure by performing metagenomics sequencing of human samples, e.g., fecal samples. This proof-of-concept study will guide us to plan further as lead analytical lab for Experimental Medicine Platform (EMP) grant funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), and to provide insights into complex health problems in maternal, newborn and child health, along with their nutritional status. Keeping this in mind, we envision to establish a center for future microbiome studies in Pakistan and the region.
This is a grant funded contractual position for a period of one year with expectations for further extension.
ResponsibilitiesYou will be responsible for:
- assisting senior faculty in conducting, managing and planning research project by determining theoretical aspects of problem and selecting method of approach
- conducting experiments, devising instrumentation and techniques record and collecting test results
- correlating data compiled in research and interpreting the results
- developing new concepts, methods and techniques to solve scientific problem
- analysing theories and research findings to determine applications
- carrying out literature survey, data searching and retrieval, utilising a variety of techniques technologies
- contributing directly to development of research strategy for on-going research projects
- compiling information, data practice exemplars for publications
- preparing quantitative and qualitative analysis of data
- preparing write-up of the results, manuscripts of paper, presentation and research proposals
- entering experimental data in appropriate software and participating in data analysis
- supervising research volunteers and students in research projects
- participating in the conduct introductory and advanced workshops for capacity building with the supervisor.
You should have:
- a PhD in Biotechnology/Genomics or related field from an HEC recognised or reputable foreign university/institution
- at least two years of work experience preferably in laboratory
- extensive experience in Molecular Biological techniques
- at least have one first author publication(s) in reputable international journal(s)
- strong background with preferable hands-on experience in Molecular Biology specially metagenomics techniques, DNA extraction from multiple tissue types, QC and QA, library preparation and sequencing (Illumina protocols), basic Bioinformatics analysis of metagenomics data would be preferable but not mandatory.
